I’ve been completely fascinated lately by late 1960s magazine advertisements. There’s a specific, undeniable visual texture in print media from this era that digital typography rarely captures.

Take the iconic Clairol ad campaign from 1968: "What's you?"

1. High-Contrast Serif Headlines The first thing that grabs you is the typography. The headline doesn’t sit timidly in a neat box. It's massive, set in a gorgeous high-contrast Didone-style serif face with dramatic curls on the letters. The characters overlap, tucking neatly into each other's negative space. The question mark is giant, almost serving as an illustration itself.

2. Overlapping Elements Unlike modern flat screens where everything lives inside strict grids, these vintage print layouts embraced overlapping organic lines. A model's face is layered over text columns, sandals stretch diagonally across the header, and decorative frames overlap the margins. It creates a physical depth that feels incredibly personal and warm.

3. The Textured Print Feel The warm off-white, yellowed-paper background and the slightly imperfect ink dispersion on the page gives it a nostalgic, cozy weight. When making my web spaces, I want to capture exactly this—less corporate glassmorphism, more rich, ink-bled scrapbook warmth.

There's nothing quite like holding a vintage paperback from the 1950s or 60s. The cover art doesn't rely on clean, generic vector graphics. Instead, they are canvases of hand-painted oil, pastel, or gouache illustrations.

I was looking at a cover illustrated by Gwen Fremlin for a romantic fiction page. It features a woman lounge-talking on an old dial telephone, surrounded by soft pinks, dusty blues, and sketchy ink overlays.

What makes it so special is the script heading. The words "Love, me" are written in a sweeping, handwritten pink ink style that spans across the center fold. It feels like a real letter written in haste. Beneath it, the small serif subtitle columns speak of "one little bride against so many dropper-inners."

It makes me realize how much we've lost in the name of "mobile-first clean layouts." Our personal sites should be scrapbooks of things we love! They should have scripts, typewriter logs, star ratings, and stamps.

Last Sunday, I wandered into a dusty thrift bookstore downtown and walked away with a stack of 1970s science fiction paperbacks for three dollars.

As I opened them, that unmistakable vanilla-scented aroma of slowly decaying paper drifted out. It's caused by the breakdown of lignin in cheap wood pulp paper—a beautiful chemical clock ticking inside our bookcases.

The covers are glorious. Massive yellow block-serif lettering, isometric starships, and illustrations done with dry-brush acrylics. The pages are thick, with deckled, uneven edges.

Reading them feels like an *event*. You are holding history, quite literally. This blog, Jambleaya, is my digital version of that dusty thrift bookstore. I hope you find something here that smells of old paper and fresh thoughts.
